Why Having Kids is Good

I can’t believe it. Anya is 7 months old today. Why is time flying so quickly???

Having kids is hard. There are plenty of sacrifices that we, as parents, have to make. However, there’s a huge upside. Having children is rewarding and can even be fun! So, I wanted to share some cool things that result from having kids. This is not your typical list that says, “Seeing the world through the kids eyes.” It ain’t your mama’s top 10 list. These are some thoughts Zack and I have had…

In no particular order:

1) Having cool straws. Who doesn’t want options?

2) Always having milk in the house for coffee. Since Bella drinks 2 gallons per week, I am guaranteed to have some extra that I can froth up for my latte. Before she was born, I never had it in the fridge because some days I’d make coffee and others I wouldn’t and it was never a must have on the shopping list.

3) I usually have snacks in my bag, in case I get hungry at 2pm between meetings. Granted, sometimes that means I have a 3 days-old, crumbling and stale muffin, but pish posh…

4) If I get bored in my car, there are at least 5 books about princesses that will keep me company. There are also dozens of princess related stickers that decorate my windows. It’s never gloomy in there.

5) Built in excuse if you don’t feel like doing something. I will admit, I rarely use this one because I feel bad “blaming” the kids or making them out to be sick when they’re really not. But, it’s good to have in the wheel house.

6) Servants. Yes, I ask my daughter to bring me things – wipes, TV remotes, hand cream. And we teach her all sorts of things so that she can be more independent. She loves nothing more than to feel like a big girl. She can now open the fridge by herself and pour a glass of ice cold, Brita water. This is gonna come in so handy on hot summer days…

7) I can actually say, “Because I said so” and they have to listen. I have dreamed of saying that to so many people…

8) Picking up my 20+ pound 7 month old is doing wonders for my back. Luckily, I am starting to teach Bella that she can take out her aggression on my muscles. Soon, she’ll be a child-masseuse-wonder. We’ll open up a spa…

9) I never have to look for a writing implement. There’s bound to be a crayon, pencil, pen, marker or piece of chalk under my foot, on the couch cushion, scattered on the table, dangling on the sink or anywhere I turn in my house. No, “let me grab a pen” moments happening here.

10) Costume changes. Having kids (under the age of 5) pretty much guarantees that you will wear at least two outfits each day. Whether your baby pukes, poops, draws, pees, spills on your clothing or cuts, rips or stretches what you’re wearing, you will have the opportunity to put on another outfit. I see this as a benefit. There are lots of things in my closet that don’t get worn as frequently as I’d like. I have taken parenthood as an excuse to dress in everything I own. I can be an athlete and a fashionista in one day. I can dress in a nice work out fit and then change into a cute dress an hour later. I feel like a movie star…I pretend like I wouldn’t be caught dead in front of the paparazzi wearing the same thing ALL day long…

11) I get so much sleep. I nap when the girls nap and go to bed the second they fall asleep. I’m so refreshed! That was funny, no? It’s funniest because: a) what nap? b) when they go to sleep, I can finally get time to myself or get some quality time with Zack ¬†and c) I have a TON of reading/TV/crafting/grooming/organizing that I’m constantly catching up on…

What are some of the highlights of having kids for you?
